![]() ![]() That contract and a really good value proposition year after year enables us to continue to support farmers in the ongoing nature of regenerative ag practices. SF: What contract requirements are asked of farmers in the program?īF: RegenConnect is a cropping cycle contract. Nonetheless, when we talk about row crops in the states that we've started RegenConnect in year one, cover crops and tillage arrangements were the most the most relevant to our ability to provide value to the grower. As a company, fertilizer management is another area that we are working particularly hard on in certain geographies and we have projects across many other commodities. In the modeling, you can see the tangible amount of carbon that can be sequestered and therefore, see the benefit to the farmer.Įnvironmental markets are evolving and through some other programs, and potentially through RegenConnect in the future, there's an opportunity to look at water outcomes. Why these, and will the program grow to include additional practices?īF: In row crop farming and because of the nature of the crop production system in the states that we've targeted, there's opportunity to reduce emissions and sequester carbon by planting cover crops and reducing tillage or doing no-till. SF: Qualifying practices for RegenConnect are cover crops and reduced or no-till. We're getting good resonance with that and it helps us then connect farmers into this growing demand from our other customers like the consumer package goods and food customers that have made their own ambitious targets. We've put in this specific program that we will reward new practices around cover crops or tillage arrangements including payment per tonne of carbon sequestered and do that in a way that is flexible, makes sense for the grower, transparent, and has the underpinnings of economics and agronomic support. It’s really about how we work with farmers in a way that makes the most economic sense to produce food on their farms but also participate in emerging environmental markets. There is also a responsibility for companies like Cargill to provide farmers with the tools to be able to participate in these new markets. What we’re seeing now is people outside that supply chain and sector also coming to that realization, which is an extremely good opportunity for the agri-food sector. SF: How does RegenConnect support the idea that ag and farmers are part of the solution for the environmental challenges we face?īF: It’s logical for people within the ag sector to know that farmers can be part of the solution and understand the good work we can do not just to produce food but to provide positive environmental benefits. RegenConnect is designed to do just that, based on the farmers’ operations.” Successful Farming caught up with Fargher recently with more background on the program. “We have a dual challenge in global agriculture to produce food and meet sustainability challenges. “We have to meet farmers where they are and stand alongside them,” Fargher says.
